— WHY IS THIS NEEDED?
Scandium-43 (T½=3.89 h) is a promising positron-emitting isotope for PET:
• Ideal theranostic pair with Scandium-47 (beta-emitter, T½=3.35 d)
• Chemically identical to Sc-47, ensuring identical biodistribution for diagnostic and therapeutic doses
• Positron energy E_max=1.2 MeV provides good image resolution
• Produced in cyclotron (Ca-43 proton irradiation) or from Ti-44/Sc-43 generator
⚠️ CRITICAL:
• Radionuclidic purity ≥99.0% — presence of other scandium isotopes is unacceptable.
• Scandium-44 (T½=3.97 h) impurity ≤1.0% — Sc-44 often co-produces. It emits high-energy gamma quanta (1157 keV), creating noise in PET images and increasing patient dose without diagnostic benefit.
• Scandium-46 (T½=83.8 d) impurity ≤0.1% — Long-lived impurity, creating radioactive waste issues and long-term irradiation.
• Radiochemical purity ≥95% — Scandium forms very stable complexes with macrocyclic chelators (DOTA, NOTA). High RCP ensures in vivo stability.
• Free Scandium ≤5% — Ionic scandium accumulates in liver and bones, distorting images and increasing dose to these organs.
• Heavy metals ≤10 ppm — Metal ions (Fe, Zn, Cu) compete with scandium for chelator binding sites, reducing labeling yield.
• pH 4.5–7.5, Endotoxins ≤175 EU/vial, Sterility — standard safety requirements.

💡 Usage tips:
1. Separation of Sc-43 and Sc-44 requires mass separation or careful selection of proton beam energy during production.
2. Labeling DOTA-peptides requires heating (95°C, 15-20 min), NOTA-conjugates can be labeled at room temperature or mild heating.
3. Presence of heavy metals in buffer or precursor sharply reduces specific activity. Use ultra-pure reagents.
4. Sc-43 is ideal for imaging processes with intermediate kinetics (peptides, small proteins).
⚠️ Note: Scandium-43 represents the "gold standard" of theranostics within a single element. Unlike Ga-68/Lu-177 pairs, where gallium and lutetium chemistry differs, scandium isotopes are chemically identical. This means diagnostic scan with Sc-43 accurately predicts distribution of therapeutic Sc-47. However, Sc-44 impurity is the main technical challenge in cyclotron production.input.csv
