Hyperpolarized xenon: lifecycle QC from cylinder to image
Hyperpolarized xenon is one of the rare medical technologies that can honestly be called modern without marketing fog: a noble gas, laser optical pumping, quantum polarization and functional lung maps in MRI. The striking image, however, depends on a strict QC chain from isotope composition to post-procedure scavenging and recovery.
Why this section matters now
In the United States, XENOVIEW prepared from Xenon Xe 129 Gas Blend is indicated for MRI evaluation of lung ventilation in adults and children aged six years and older. Current research extends Xe-129 MRI beyond a ventilation image toward gas-exchange, small-airway and vascular assessment.
One lifecycle, six control zones
1. Isotope & gas
Xe-129 enrichment, medical-gas purity and Xe/O₂/N₂ composition.
2. SEOP
Laser, magnetic field, optical pumping and achieved polarization.
3. Hold & move
T1 relaxation, vial condition, temperature, shock and remaining polarization lifetime.
4. Deliver
Blender, flow, pressure, FiO₂, hypoxia risk and patient safety.
5. Image
MRI signal uniformity, SNR, field quality, and Xe-133 SPECT/dosimetry where applicable.
6. Recover
Room-air monitoring, scavenging, purification, recovery and recycling of expensive gas.
