Preservatives Combo QC — Control of Combined Preservatives

ℹ️  Utility checks critical parameters of preservative mixtures:
   • Sodium Benzoate: 90–110% of Label Claim
   • Potassium Sorbate: 90–110% of Label Claim
   • Methylparaben: 90–110% of Label Claim
   • Propylparaben: 90–110% of Label Claim
   • Solution pH: 4.0–6.0 (Optimal range)

⚠️  CRITICAL: pH > 5.5 sharply reduces efficacy of benzoates and sorbates!
   Incorrect component ratio may lead to microbiological spoilage.

— WHY IS THIS NEEDED?
Liquid pharmaceutical forms often use combinations of preservatives to broaden the spectrum of activity.
• Benzoates and sorbates are active mainly against yeasts and molds in acidic media.
• Parabens are active against bacteria and fungi in a wider pH range.
• Synergistic effect allows reducing the concentration of each component.
• HPLC allows simultaneous quantification of all components in one analysis.
• pH control is mandatory as it determines the fraction of undissociated (active) acid form.

⚠️  CRITICAL:
• pH must be maintained in the range 4.0–5.5 for maximum efficacy of benzoates/sorbates.
• Parabens may hydrolyze at extreme pH values.
• Total preservative concentration must not exceed safe limits (toxicity).
• Check compatibility of preservatives with other excipients (e.g., PEG may bind parabens).

💡 Usage tips:
1. Use reversed-phase HPLC (C18) with water/acetonitrile gradient + buffer (phosphate or acetate).

3. Calibrate instrument using mixed standard solutions.
4. Account for alcohol influence (if present) on paraben retention.
5. Regularly check system suitability (separation of benzoate and paraben peaks).

⚠️ Note: If PEG or polysorbates are present, effective paraben concentration decreases due to micelle formation. In such cases, dose increase or use of other preservatives is required.

URS & FS — User Requirements and Functional Specification

This document describes the controlled interface, user requirements and functional behaviour of Preservatives_Combo_QC. The utility is intended for automated verification of laboratory, pharmacopoeial, analytical or manufacturing QC parameters using input.csv and producing a structured output.json result.
